Bangkok-the steamy, crowded, mysterious capital of Thailand, and the funky beating heart of SEA. Home of the Emerald Buddha, no other city in the world evokes quite the range of human expression. Bangkok is the place where you go to get lost or go to find yourself, or find anything at all for that matter.

The modernity of Bangkok (Krung Thep Maha Nakhon in Thai which mean city of angels) match few people’s visions of the capital of exotic Siam. Spiked with scores of highrise buildings of concrete and glass on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, it’s a vast flatness which holds a population of at least nine million, and feels even bigger. Under the shadow of the skyscrapers you’ll find a heady mix of frenetic markets and hushed golden temples, of glossy cutting-edge clubs and early-morning almsgiving ceremonies.

If it’s night life you are seeking, Bangkok is legendary. The streets of Nana, Pat Pong, and Khao San are alive with alcohol and girls (and even ladyboys). Hundreds of higher class clubs exists with the latest European DJs visiting and stirring the dancing masses.

There are so many things to do and so many guides to Bangkok. If you go, pick a few things out and have fun. To beat traffic, ride a Tuk-Tuk once and always bargain for less than what they try to charge you. Lastly, get a massage! This country is truly the “land of smiles.”

Indeed, the city of Bangkok depicts the life of Amazing Thailand.

Khlong Toey is a very ‘fresh’ market, offering low prices on raw meat, seafood, farm produce, and a few other items (clothing, kitchenware, etc). A small, hidden village deep within the Bangkok concrete jungle, this extensive market seems to have a life of its own. Quaintly tucked away within a grimy city block and practically unnoticable from busy Rama IV Road, a pleasantly unexpected, laid-back environment lies within. Some sections can get a bit bloody, and if you’re squemish, no worries, as not all sections are strictly filled with raw meat. If you still have an appetite, a few food stalls serve Thai curries and other local staples.

If you’re in Bangkok on a weekend, don’t miss the Weekend Market adjacent to the Mo Chit BTS stop at the northern terminus of the skytrain. Chatuchak covers a vast area with rows of stalls selling everything — souvenirs, “antiques,” fresh and dried seafood, vegetables and condiments, blue and white pottery, pets of every sort (from guppies to Rotweilers), orchids and other exotic plants, clothing, and a host of strange exotic items on top of the usual array of T-shirts, trinkets and souvenirs.

It’s a great way to introduce yourself to the exotic sights, flavors, and colors of Thai life. It’s a great way to get all of those souvenirs you didn’t buy yet. The market looks like chaos, but there is some organization going on with similar shops forming small clusters (Nancy Chandler’s illustrated Market Map has a color-coded insert) but it’s a fun place to get lost (and you will). Open on Saturdays and Sundays. Try to get there early in the morning before the heat. Hint: Hop off the skytrain at Saphan Kwai and walk the one stop to the main market area, staying on the left (or west) side of the train. All along here you’ll find some great antique and jewelry stalls.

Suan Lum has many of the same Thai trinkets and souvenirs you’ll find in other of Bangkok’s markets, but here under covered walkways and with a few bars, restaurants and a huge covered food court with live bands nightly.

The Patpong area is famous for its bars, neon lights, girls, sex shows, girls, massage parlors, but in recent years has spawned a bustling Night Market along the central streets (hemmed-in on all sides by go-go bars and sex show clubs). This popular Night Market has lots of faux brands: pirated CDs and tapes, designer knockoffs, copy watches (including “Rolexes” that should last for at least a few weeks), leather goods stamped with desirable logos (sure to hold up better than cardboard) — not especially cheap, but lively and fun, especially if you enjoy crowds and the challenge of con artists. Open daily after sundown.

Not an official market, the nighttime stalls on Khao San Road cater to young travelers and, as such, this is where you’ll find the funkiest do-dads and trinkets in town. From hip-hop fashions and cool T-shirts, to small original artworks, souvenirs and lots of pirate CD and DVD stalls (you didn’t hear it from me), you’ll find it all on Khao San (and much the same stuff as in other markets in Thailand at good prices). It’s worth the trip for the atmosphere alone, bass-thumping clubs, busy bars and Internet shops and all the tattooed, pierced and idealistic young travelers going or coming from all corners of Asia. The area just north of Khao San is a maze of small department stores, shops and very affordable retail goods, from clothes to furniture to food.

Nouvelle Thai cuisine tailored to the Western tastes is the specialty of this pleasant restaurant. Just a short walk from the skytrain (near Phrom Pong) and just across from the hulking Emporium Shopping Center, Lemongrass is set in a small Thai mansion handsomely converted and furnished with antiques and a visit here makes it easy to forget busy Bangkok outside. Try house favorites pomelo salad or chicken satay. Also excellent is the tom yang kung (a spicy sweet-and-sour prawn soup with ginger shoots), and the lemongrass chicken is tender and juicy.

With its sister restaurant in Vientiane, Laos, L’Opera Bangkok has been hosting visitors and expats since they first opened in the 1970s, when Soi 39 was but a dusty little alley with cows grazing out front. Now it’s a sophisticated enclave and they’ve got the formula just right, dim lights in a glassed-in pavilion, cool jazz in the air, and good, affordable Italian. Come with friends and fill the table. We had biscotti appetizers followed by a decadent seafood salad. For a main course, go for the fresh fish done as you like or any of the grilled items or fine pastas. I had a delicious squid-ink linguini and clams — not to be missed.
